Courts Forced to Adapt to 2022 Technology

The pandemic brought a silver lining: Ontario’s courts and justice system were finally pushed to embrace modern technology.

  • Hearings are now held via Zoom
  • Mediations take place through Microsoft Teams
  • Court documents can be filed and shared electronically

These innovations help reduce costs (less travel), save resources (less paper), and save time (no more waiting around in courtrooms—you can work at your desk while awaiting your hearing).

Of course, virtual proceedings come with trade-offs. In-person hearings are often more fluid and are less prone to technical issues.

Still, having both in-person and virtual options moving forward significantly improves access to justice—particularly for those in rural areas or with mobility challenges.
